International and Comparative Law Quarterly Annual Lecture: The Editorial Board invites you to the International and Comparative Law Quarterly Annual Lecture, to be delivered by Dr Sofia Galani, on ‘Human Rights Obligations in Maritime Search and Rescue’, on Tuesday 12 May 2026 (17.30-19.30, followed by a reception, or online via Zoom). The lecture will be based on Dr Galani’s article, recently published in ICLQ volume 74(1):The duty to render assistance to persons in distress is well established in the international law of the sea, but none of the instruments which codify the duty contains human rights obligations. However, serious human rights violations may occur during search and rescue (SAR) operations or because of the lack thereof. This article examines the duty of States to render assistance to persons in distress through the lens of international human rights law and advocates for a human rights-oriented approach to SAR. It discusses the due diligence nature of the duty, the scope of jurisdiction in maritime SAR and how States should act to adhere to their human rights obligations from the moment they receive a distress call through to the moment they disembark rescued persons on land. The event, chaired by the ICLQ General Editor Professor Alex Mills, will also provide the opportunity to present this year’s Hazel Fox Early Career Prize to Dr Priya Urs, for her article ‘The Articulation of Obligations Erga Omnes and Erga Omnes Partes by the International Court of Justice: Coherence or Confusion?’ published in volume 74(2). Dr Urs is Junior Research Fellow in Law at St John’s College, University of Oxford, where she is nearing the end of a four-year research project on the articulation and enforcement of obligations erga omnes (partes) in international law.More information on the event and registration details can be found here.

Discussion – The Iran War, the Use of Force and the new Middle East: The SLS International Law sections presents Marc Weller (Chatham House) in a discussion with Solon Solomon (BUL) on ‘The Iran War, the Use of Force and the new Middle East’. The event will be held on 30 April at 17.00 at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in central London and the registration link can be found here.

Webinar – Energy Security, Transition, and Geopolitical Crises: Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to raise pressing questions about global energy security, particularly given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz for oil and gas transit. Disruptions in this critical route can quickly affect global supply chains, pricing, and overall market stability. This webinar brings together diverse perspectives to examine the legal frameworks governing key energy corridors and to assess the broader implications of current geopolitical uncertainty for energy systems worldwide.

The discussion will also situate these challenges within the context of the global energy transition, with a focus on Southeast Asia and China. As countries in the region balance reliance on energy imports with ambitious climate goals, the session will explore how short-term security concerns intersect with long-term transition strategies. The webinar will take place on 21 April 2026, from 3:00–4:30 pm (Singapore time) via Zoom. More information and registration here.
