Call for Applications

Sustainability and Public Law: The “Sustainability and Public Law” PhD project, part of the Radboud Research Centre for State and Law (SteR), would like to invite you to a doctoral workshop exploring questions of sustainability in public law on 7 April 2025. During the workshop, PhD candidates can present their research and brainstorm creative and multidisciplinary approaches to this varied and complex legal issue through several thematic panels. The workshop provides an opportunity to exchange ideas and critical perspectives on the way public law addresses sustainability together with peers currently working in this dynamic field.
PhD candidates whose research explores different aspects of sustainability and public law are encouraged to apply. Applications should be submitted by 3 February 2025. More information about the workshop and the application can be found here.

Calls for Papers

Dutch Practice in International Law: The Netherlands Yearbook of International Law (NYIL) is inviting submissions for its ‘Dutch Practice in International Law’ section in Volume 55. The ‘Dutch Practice in International Law’ section is a recurring feature of the NYIL that is independent from the Yearbook’s general theme. This section looks to provide academic reflections and commentaries on contemporary and salient developments in the practice of international law in The Netherlands, highlighting key cases and evolving legal doctrines that have emerged from Dutch practice. The current call for papers invites contributions that put forward discussions on matters of international law that concern Dutch practice, particularly in 2024. 

The editors of Volume 55 of the NYIL, are pleased to invite submissions for this section of the volume, with the aim for it to be published in February of 2026. Authors are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 400 words by 28 February 2025. All emails and files should be sent to nyil@asser.nl. More information can be found here.

2025 Human Rights Essay Award: Submit your essay to the 2025 Human Rights Essay Award. The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, which seeks to stimulate the production of academic articles in the field of international human rights law. The topic of the 2025 Award is “Human Trafficking and Human Rights”. Participants have the flexibility to choose any subject related to this topic, however, the scope of the essay must directly relate to this year’s topic, or it will be disqualified. The deadline to enter your submission is 3 February 2025. Please note that this competition is open to all lawyers around the world but only lawyers. In other words, only candidates who have already obtained their first law degree are eligible.

An International Criminal Law Year in Review: Significant Cases and Developments of 2024: On 11 February 2025 at 3.00 pm EST, the ASIL International Criminal Law Interest Group will host an International Criminal Law Year in Review. As we begin the new year, leading scholars in the field will discuss and debate some of the most momentous international criminal law developments from the year that has passed. The event will feature Leila Sadat, the James Carr Professor of International Criminal Law at Washington University School of Law and former Special Adviser on Crimes Against Humanity to the ICC Prosecutor; Tom Dannenbaum, Associate Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy; and Valerie Oosterveld Research Chair in International Criminal Justice at Western University, Faculty of Law, and current Special Adviser on Crimes Against Humanity to the ICC Prosecutor. Book Launch – Protection of the Environment under International Law during Occupation: Join Westminster Law School and International Law at Westminster (ILaW) Research Group on 5 February 2025, 5.30 pm, in London, to discuss the new book by Dr Waad Abualrob on Protection of the Environment under International Law during Occupation (Routledge 2024) with Dr Saeed Bagheri (University of Reading), Dr Meagan Wong (University of Essex), Dr Waad Abualrob (University of Westminster) and Dr Marco Longobardo (University of Westminster). Ad Astra Fellowship: The UCD Sutherland School of Law wishes to appoint an Ad Astra Fellow in International Law and Global Justice (ILGJ). The Fellow will have demonstrated expertise in public international law and diverse global justice theories. The post holder will contribute to team teaching across public international law subjects, as well as developing theoretically-informed courses in their field of expertise in ILGJ. The post holder’s own specialist subfield should complement and expand the School’s teaching and research in international law. The Fellow’s research agenda should align with advancing sustainability and equity through critical and interdisciplinary inquiry into contemporary global justice challenges. Expertise in international criminal justice, climate justice, border justice, racial justice, or any other cognate field is welcome.
