Human Rights Essay Award (HREA): The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law in the United States, extends a formal Call for Papers for the 2024 Human Rights Essay Award (HREA). The submission deadline for this Award is set for February 1, 2024at 11:59 PM (EST). The topic for the 2024 Award is “Protection and Assurance of Human Rights in Digital Environments.” Entrants are granted the liberty to select any aspect within this thematic domain for their essays; however, it is imperative that the content of the submissions directly addresses the specified topic. Noteworthy is the Academy’s perspective that international human rights law encompasses international humanitarian law and international criminal law. Submissions deviating from the prescribed thematic scope will be disqualified.

The Academy is set to recognize excellence by awarding two winners—one for essays submitted in English and another for those in Spanish. The accolade includes a full tuition scholarship to the 2024 Program of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, offering choices between the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance options. It is essential to acknowledge that travel, housing, and per diem living expenses are not covered. Scheduled to unfold from May 28 to June 14, 2024, the program promises a comprehensive exploration of human rights and humanitarian law. Moreover, the most outstanding essays stand the chance of being featured in the American University International Law Review, renowned for its wide-ranging and pertinent academic content. With a submission deadline of February 1, 2024, the competition invites participation from legal professionals worldwide, exclusively open to individuals who have already obtained their first law degree. ‘Defend Forward’ and International Law – SCIEL Seminar: The Sheffield Centre for International and European Law is pleased to invite Pål Wrange, Professor of International Law at Stockholm University, to the University of Sheffield.  They will provide a lecture on ‘Defend Forward’ and International Law, followed by a discussion and Q&A at Bartolome House. The Rules of Interpretation of Customary International Law: The TRICI-Law project, AthensPIL, the University of Groningen, and the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens have the pleasure to invite you to a conference on ‘The Rules of Interpretation of Customary International Law’. The conference will take place at the Faculty of Law of the University of Athens, on 12-13 October 2023. The aim of the conference will be to reflect upon the prospects, methods and limits of rules of interpretation of customary international law, focusing on both theoretical considerations and the practice of international (and domestic) courts in interpreting customary law across different fields of international law.
