Call for Papers

Trade, Law and Development Special Issue on Trade and Technology: The Trade, Law and Development Journal is now inviting unpublished manuscripts for publication of its Special Issue on “Trade and Technology: Rebooting Global Trade for the Digital Millennium” (Vol. 13 No. 1, Winter ’21 Issue) in the form of Articles, Notes, Comments and Book Reviews. An illustrative list of areas under the theme that authors could write upon are: E-commerce; Artificial Intelligence; Implications for Trade Facilitation; Blockchain; Data Protection and Security; Competitiveness and Digital Taxation; Digital Divide between Advanced Economies and Developing World; Impact on Investment; Trade Policy; and Implications for Gender Equality. These sub-issues are not exhaustive, and the Journal is open to receiving submissions on all aspects related to Trade and Technology and its impact on the global trading system. This special issue, currently scheduled for publication in Summer 2021, will provide an ideal platform to deliberate on such issues related to trade and technology. AsianSIL Annual Conference 2021: The Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL) is pleased to announce a call for abstracts for its 8th Annual Conference on “What place for international law in the Asian future?” The Main Conference will be held 24-29 March 2021, while a PhD Students Workshop will be held 20-21 March 2021. Both events will be held via Zoom. The theme of the conference deals with the ways in which COVID-19 has challenged the post-World War II global order. The ravages of this pandemic are having far-reaching implications for the international order, as well as highlighting existing structures of inequality within and between nations. All this is happening at a time when populism, nationalism and isolationism are on the rise. What will these developments and the intensification of US-China rivalry mean for the future of Asia and what place will international law have in that future? How well have our established and emerging institutions of global governance responded to the challenges arising from the pandemic and States’ responses to it? The conference will explore the role of international law in managing the challenges faced by post-pandemic Asia and seeks to identify and address key legal issues relating to the place of international law in the future of Asia. The Society of Legal Scholars Annual Conference: The Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) will host its Annual Conference from Tuesday 31 August – Friday 3 September at Durham University. Participants can attend in person or online. The International Law Section invites abstracts on any issue relating to Public or Private International Law. We welcome proposals representing a full range of intellectual perspectives and methodological approaches in the subject section. Each panel will feature a commentator, including Professor Christian Tams (University of Glasgow), Professor Philippa Webb (King’s College London), Professor Duncan French (University of Lincoln) and Dr Martins Paparinskis (University College London). We welcome papers for a panel on the following theme: ‘Why is international environmental law failing?’ We also welcome papers for a panel on the following theme: ‘What do “general international law” and “generalists” mean?’ If you are interested in delivering a paper or organising a panel, please submit your paper abstract or panel details by 11:59 pm UK time on Friday 26 March 2021.  All abstracts and panel details must be submitted through the Oxford Abstracts conference system which can be accessed using this link. Announcements

Women’s Voices in the International Judiciary: The SNF-funded project “Diversity on the International Bench: Building Legitimacy for International Courts and Tribunals”, led by Professors Neus Torbisco-Casals and Andrew Clapham, is launching a monthly public lecture series on “Women’s Voices in the International Judiciary”. The series aims to reflect on the lack of diversity in the international judiciary ––especially gender diversity––, which raises concerns not just in terms of descriptive representation and symbolic self-identification, but also regarding unconscious bias and systemic privileging of specific ideologies or positions in the process of adjudication. The lectures will run from March 2021 until Spring 2022, with the inaugural lecture being delivered by Lady Françoise Tulkens (Former Vice-President of the ECtHR) on 1 March at 18:30 hrs., via webinar. Confirmed speakers include Ms Irene Khan (UN), Professor Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler (Lévy-Kaufmann-Kohler), Ms Catherine Marchi-Uhel (IIIM-Syria), and Dr Navi Pillay (former UN, ICC, and ICTR). The lectures are open to the broader public, but registration is required for attendance.

Fellowship with the Berlin Potsdam Research Group: The Berlin Potsdam Research Group “The International Rule of Law – Rise or Decline?” invites applications for one Fellowship starting on 1 July 2021 or at a later mutually agreed date. The duration of the fellowship will be for 12-24 months. The deadline for the application is 15 March 2021. More information about the fellowship can be found here.
