Calls for Papers

Call for Papers – Volume 12(1) of the Cambridge International Law Journal: The Cambridge International Law Journal (CILJ) is pleased to invite submissions for Volume 12(1), to be published in June 2023. The Board welcomes articles and case notes that engage with current themes in international law, as well as book reviews on recently published works.

Volume 12(1) will include a special section on ‘Global Security Challenges and International Law’, in collaboration with the European Society of International Law’s Interest Group on International Economic Law. Security threats, both persisting and emerging, are increasingly the subject of international concern: whether and how international law can effectively address these challenges is a matter of utmost importance. At the same time, the question of which issues are deemed security threats is itself open to scrutiny. We invite contributions on this theme, in addition to contributions to the general section.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 pm (BST) on Sunday, 30 October 2022. For more information, click here.

Call for Abstracts – International Theory ISA Pre-Conference Workshop: The IT Section of ISA, with generous funding and support from the journal International Theory, will be hosting a day-long workshop in advance of the 2023 ISA Convention in Montréal for young career and underrepresented scholars who work on international theory.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, March 14 at one of the conference hotels and will give scholars an opportunity to meet with members of the IT editorial team and receive feedback on a manuscript they intend to submit to IT or another journal. Travel stipends of 500 USD will be provided to all participants. Participants need to be(come) members of ISA and be registered for the 2023 Annual Convention.

Our top priority is meeting the needs of scholars who might otherwise have a hard time accessing intellectual networks in the development of their research and career, including early career scholars, those without tenured/tenure-track appointments, scholars in the Global South, and Black and Indigenous scholars. We are interested in proposals that address different forms of theorizing the international, including but not limited to empirical generalizations, empirical abstractions (also based on field research), concept analysis, as well as political and normative theory (IPT).

To apply for this workshop, please submit an abstract and short paper outline (max. 3 pages) to: InternationalTheory@cambridge.org. The deadline for submissions is 16 October 2022, so that participants will receive their acceptance before the registration deadline. Please include “IT workshop” in the subject line.

Events

Women in International Law Conference, hosted by the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for International, European and Regulatory Procedural Law: 13-14 October 2022 (hybrid)

This event, which builds upon the talk held by Prof. Hélène Ruiz Fabri on the same subject in April 2021, and a remote workshop in February 2022, will bring together contributors to the upcoming Oxford Handbook on Women and International Law co-edited by Prof. Ruiz Fabri (MPI Luxembourg), Prof. Grossman (University of Baltimore), Prof. Ramji-Nogales (Temple University), and Prof. Dawuni (Howard University). This conference will examine the role of women in international law and the wide ranging impacts of international law on women and vice versa. International law affects women in myriad ways, including efforts to combat discrimination against women and to promote them as actors in the field. Building upon Hillary Charlesworth, Christine Chinkin, and Shelley Wright’s ground-breaking ‘Feminist Approaches to International Law’ (published in the American Journal of International Law in 1991) it will examine and promote a diversity of critical feminist approaches to the topic. Contributing authors will be welcomed at the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg for Procedural Law for two days of presentations and exchanges on the many novel facets of this project contained within their draft chapters for the upcoming Oxford Handbook.

The deadline for registration is 7 October 2022. For more information, click here.

Nuremberg Forum 2022: The International Criminal Court 2002-2022: A Court in Practice: 13-15 October 2022 (hybrid)

The International Nuremberg Principles Academy is organising its annual high-level international conference Nuremberg Forum from 13 to 15 October 2022. The Nuremberg Forum 2022 will be held as a hybrid event. The speakers and a limited number of participants will gather at Courtroom 600 of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice. An interactive online platform allows broad attendance including interactive engagement and discussion. Prior registration is required.

The conference will examine the achievements of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its first two decades. High-level experts will analyse its work and will reflect on its set-up and achievements in light of the Nuremberg Principles and the Nuremberg legacy. Six panels which will identify the ICC’s strengths and weaknesses in its fight against impunity:

·         Panel I: The ICC’s Major Achievements

·         Panel II: Goal Setting: How Deterrent is the ICC in Reality?

·         Panel III: Complementarity: Universal Aspirations Versus Tangible Results

·         Panel IV: Justice is Interconnected and Does not End with a Sentencing: Reflecting on the Experiences of Victims, Witnesses and the Accused Before the ICC

·         Panel V: Whose Outreach and to Whom?

·         Panel VI: The ICC in the Next Five, Ten and 15 Years

The leading questions at the heart of this conference are: “What have been the achievements of the ICC, especially in terms of its own goal setting and wider universal aspirations and what challenges does it still face?” and “How did the ICC strengthen, over the years, its contribution to the international legal order, and how can its contributions be improved?”

The Nuremberg Forum will bring together leading and distinguished practitioners, academics and other scholars from across the international criminal justice field and related domains. The keynote addresses will be delivered by H. E. Christian Wenaweser (Ambassador of the Permanent Mission of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the United Nations), Luis Moreno-Ocampo (former Prosecutor of the ICC), Fatou Bensouda (High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, The Gambia and former Prosecutor of the ICC) and Brigid Inder OBE (Former Executive Director of Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice).
