Discussion Group: Legal Pluralism, Voluntary Compliance, and Universal International Law: Join the SLS International Law Section to discuss legal pluralism in international law with Dr Julie Fraser (Assistant Professor at the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights (SIM) and the Montaigne Centre at Utrecht University). Julie will discuss the incorporation of local norms, using Islamic law as an example, and how we can promote the universality of international law. Attendees are encouraged to share examples from their own research and exchange views in this informal lunchtime discussion group. We invite colleagues to register their interest to attend this discussion group no later than Monday 24 May at 17:00 (BST) by email to: Alexander[dot]Gilder[at]rhul[dot]ac[dot]uk.

European Court of Human Rights’ Webinar on ‘Detention during Pandemic’: The Criminal Law Group of the European Court of Human Rights, in cooperation with the University of Bologna, Liverpool John Moores University, Zagreb Law Faculty and ‘Beyond Detention’ Interest Group is convening a series of webinars on the broader theme of ‘Punishment, Detention, Crisis: Academic Judicial Dialogues’. The third instalment of the series is scheduled for Thursday, 20 May 2021 at 3 pm London time (4 pm CET or 10 am EST). The Webinar is chaired by Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Ivana Jelić, and features Triestino Mariniello (Reader in Law at Liverpool John Moores University) and Roberto Chenal (Lawyer at the European Court of Human Rights) as speakers, and Liora Lazarus (Professor in Law at University of British Columbia) as discussant. Fifth Biennial “Responsibility to Protect in Theory and Practice” Conference – In Memoriam of Professor Edward Luck: We kindly invite attendees to the 5th conference in a series of the “Responsibility to Protect in Theory and Practice” biennial conferences, chaired by professor Vasilka Sancin, Ph. D., and this year organized by the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana and Edge Hill University. The conference will be held in memoriam of Professor Edward Luck, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect between 2008 and 2012 and the keynote speaker at our first conference in Ljubljana in 2013. The conference will take place online on June 1 and 2, 2021 and is free of charge. The keynote speakers at the conference are: Dr Karen Smith, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect; Alice Wairimu Nderitu, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide; and Dr Simon Adams, Executive Director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect.
