Calls for Papers

• The University of Cagliari (Italy), Department of Public Law and Social Studies has issued a call for papers with the theme of Conceptualising Accountability in International Economic Law. The University welcomes ”submissions that describe new (previously unpublished) cutting-edge research in the following focus areas : Accountability and Law of International Development Banks; Accountability and WTO Law; Accountability and International Environmental and Energy Law; Accountability and Investment Law; Accountability and International Development Aid Law;Accountability and Multinational Enterprises; Accountability and Non-governmental Organisations; Accountability and UN Agencies; Accountability and Regional Intergovernmental Organisations; Accountability and Law-makers.” Interested candidates are invited to submit to federico.esu@gmail.com a 500-word abstract in English, with indication of the author(s), their affiliation and full contact information. Closing date for abstracts’ submission: 31/03/2014. Acceptance of abstracts: 15/04/2014 Deadline for draft papers’ submission: 15/07/2014. • In anticipation of International Law Weekend 2014 – to be held on October 23-25, 2014, in New York City – the sponsors would like to invite submissions of proposals for panels, roundtables, and lectures at International Law Weekend (ILW) 2014. The overall theme of ILW 2014 is International Law in a Time of Chaos. The role of international law in conflict mitigation is  a focus  – whether by building commercial links between states, fighting corruption, improving democratic governance, providing methods for resolving international and ethnic disputes, or regulating the use of force.  International Law Weekend 2014 will seek to address the role of public and private international lawyers in each of these tasks. • The Federalist Society is hosting an event entitled: The NSA, Security, Privacy, and Intelligence on February 24th. From the description: “In the 12 years since 9/11, as the national security threat matrix has become increasingly complex, technological advances have expanded intelligence gathering capabilities significantly. Recently, public concern about government monitoring of individuals has come to the forefront of the discussion. To address the intersection of security, privacy, and intelligence, the President has proposed several reforms, and is studying others in consultation with Congress. This Symposium will analyze and offer observations on those proposals.” Speakers include: Steven G. Bradbury, Michael Chertoff, Harley Geiger, Jim Harper, Peter S. Margulies, Nathan A. Sales, Julian Sanchez, Vincent J. Vitkowsky, Kenneth L. Wainstein, Benjamin Wittes. More information can be found here.
• NYU Law School will host a symposium from February 27-28, on the topic of New Approaches to International Regulatory Cooperation. The symposium kicks off with a keynote address by C. Boyden Gray on the topic of the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership, and altogether gathers leading practitioners, government officials, and
  scholars from different fields and regions of the world, to address the timely and important questions implicated by the growing need for effective regulatory cooperation.

• The University of Virginia School of Law’s Human Rights Program and the American Red Cross are hosting our 5th Annual International Humanitarian Law Student Workshop on March 22-23 (Saturday & Sunday) at the Law School in Charlottesville. The two day workshop consists of presentations and small group exercises that will guide participants through an extensive examination of international humanitarian law, with a focus on its application to combatants and civilians. Faculty includes international legal scholars and experts from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), American Red Cross, military Judge Advocates, and UVA School of Law. We are delighted to have Professor John Cerone and Justice Richard Goldstone join us again this year. This workshop attendance is free for participants. Applications are available on the UVA Law Human Rights Program website. The application deadline is February 24, 2014. Selected participants will be notified by March 1, and we will endeavor to find student hosts for those who need housing (though can’t promise that all will be accommodated).
