- Syria has claimed that anti-government forces carried out the massacre in Houla in order to spur other nations into intervening. The UN and other nations have expressed concern that Syria is on the brink of a sectarian civil war. Russia and the US have been trading accusations about the situation in Syria. Anne-Marie Slaughter at FP posits that Syria is not a problem from hell…but if we don’t act quickly, it will be.
- A Syrian rebel group is claiming to hold 11 Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Syria on May 22.
- Our own Julian Ku writes about what he calls the mild fallout over NY Times article detailing the Obama administration’s targeting policy and posits the position may even be gaining legal ground. On the other side of the story, Daphne Eviatar and Gabor Rona on FP urge officials to kill the kill list as the administration is grossly misreading international law.
- The UN Security Council is concerned about the lack of aid access in the border region between Sudan and South Sudan.
- Additionally in Sudan, a woman has been sentenced to death by stoning for an adultery conviction. Human Rights Watch urges an end to this practice.
- According to the freed French journalist who was held hostage by FARC for a month, the rebel group’s leaders are ready for peace talks, but the younger fighters don’t write off many more years of war.
- Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng has urged the US to push for the rule of law in China.
- The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda has sentenced former Minister of Youth and Sports to life in prison for involvement in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
- Canada has finalized its withdrawal from the UN World Tourism Office following the decision to appoint Robert Mugabe as tourism ambassador. The UN meanwhile disputes that it involves a formal appointment.
- Aung San Suu Kyi has warned against “reckless optimism” over the reforms in Myanmar and has asked foreign investors to focus on job creation to defuse the time bomb of high youth employment.
- An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian gunman were killed at a border crossing in Gaza this morning.
- The Italian Supreme Court has followed the ICJ’s ruling in Germany v. Italy by accepting Germany’s immunity in compensation claims by Italian victims of nazi war crimes.
