Symposium – Crisis as Catalyst: In honor of International Law Weekend 2025’s theme of ‘Crisis as Catalyst,’ ABILA is hosting its next blogging symposium with the International Humanitarian Law Committee. Crisis as Catalyst in International Humanitarian Law lends itself to many blog themes. These may include, but are not limited to:
- International Criminal Court sanctions
- Enforcement of Leahy Laws and the “ensure respect” obligation of the Geneva Conventions
- Challenges to the implementation of principles of distinction and proportionality in modern warfare
- Enhancing accountability through the new Ljubljana/The Hague Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance
To participate, kindly submit a 200-word abstract and a brief biography to Freya Doughty-Wagner at media@ila-americanbranch.org by 27 June 27 2025. Abstracts and biographies may be in Word or PDF format. Please include the phrase ‘blog symposium’ in the email’s subject line. Abstracts must address the ILW 2025 theme from an international humanitarian law perspective. See further details here.
Conference – Post Hegemonic International Law?: The Association of Young International Law Scholars (AjV), the German Society of International Law (DGIR), and the University of Zurich invite early career researchers to submit paper proposals for a conference exploring the question: Are we facing a post-hegemonic international law? If so, what new imaginaries and frameworks emerge to conceptualize this shift? The event will foster interdisciplinary dialogue among legal scholars, historians, political scientists, and practitioners on the future of international law and its contemporary challenges.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: the effects of armed conflict on human rights and humanitarian law, environmental and climate justice, global trade and economic law, digital technologies and data governance, refugee and migration law, international criminal law, and the evolving roles of international courts. We welcome submissions (max. 400 words) from early career researchers, particularly those from underrepresented groups in academia, by 1 July 2025 via this link. Selected participants will be notified by mid-July, and final papers (max. 5,000 words) are due by 1 November 2025. Please direct any inquiries to conference@ajv-germany.de.
