International Law’s Local Encounters: Experiences and Imaginaries of (de-)Coloniality: Join us for an engaging two-day workshop on June 5 and 6, 2025, at the University of Amsterdam to explore local contestations about the pluralities of ‘futures’ in international law. We are interested in all fields of or relating to international law in asking questions like: how are claims to decoloniality and decolonization coming to expression in international legal practice via and through local experiences and global solidarities – and how is it shaping international law? And how can we understand current and historical claims to decolonial futures through international law by taking seriously the specific places that they arise from? Situating the local in international law gives a vantage point of where claims are made and formulated in international law through different visions of the future and contexts. Think of, e.g., the ICJ Advisory Opinion proceedings on ‘Obligations of States in respect of Climate Change’ which was shaped by local understandings in Vanuatu of the futures that international law must address.

300-word abstracts are due by January 5, 2025. You can read more about the workshop and access the submission form here.
