15 Jun Threats in Bakassi Over Nigeria’s Compliance with the ICJ
I may have spoken a bit too soon about the likelihood of Nigerian compliance with the ICJ’s 2002 judgment awarding the Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon. Here is a report detailing seriously angry reactions in Bakassi itself. My favorite angry reaction:
The Paramount Ruler of Bakassi, Chief Etim Edet said: “I was born there. I schooled there. Watch out, on the day that Nigeria withdraws its soldiers from Bakassi, the sun will stand still as it happened in the day of Joshua. Bakassi is not like what happened in North Eastern Nigeria where as water was receding, people moved over to that place. In Bakassi, we are the Aborigines.
“I am shocked at this New York meeting. You can’t just trample on people like that. Terribly shocked. Without informing us. When you are told that your mother is ill and the person eventually dies, you won’t be so shocked. But when you are not aware that she is ill and you are suddenly told that she is dead, you can imagine the shock. I am so shocked.”
Yikes. Stay tuned.
