Those who follow human rights know that each year the State Department publishes an annual country report on the status of human rights in virtually every country in the world. But what be lost on many is that the USTR publishes something similar for trade. It is called the National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers (NTE) and is an annual report documenting foreign trade and investment barriers and U.S. efforts to reduce and eliminate those barriers. The report was released last week and covers 62 countries, highlighting both successes and failures in the past year.
The major successes: EU geographical indications, Brazilian anti-piracy efforts, and the removal of Japanese restrictions on imported apples. Major problems: inadequate Chinese enforcement of intellectual property, EU subsidies on civilian aircraft, and access to the Japanese market for U.S. beef.
