Gender Equality at the Football Pitch

Gender Equality at the Football Pitch

Read this article about Iranian women seeking gender equality in its simplest terms: at the football pitch. “The battle is for equal gender rights and opportunities, from all-encompassing issues to smaller ones such as the right to watch matches in a football stadium.”

When the women organized a campaign to watch the football match, they were escorted onto a bus, and driven far from the football match. “When they got on the bus, they were taken to a distant square, where they were dropped off and warned not to come back. Once the bus started to get some distance from the stadium, everyone began screaming.”

The event was organized by female bloggers as a coordinated campaign to attend the football match between Iran and Costa Rica at Azadi (“freedom”) stadium in Tehran. The incident has ignited the public attention in Iran, with dozens of reports and photos.

Imagine that. Women on a bus demanding equality.
