2021 Rosalyn Higgins Prize: The Law & Practice of International Courts and Tribunals (LPICT) now invites submissions for the 2021 Rosalyn Higgins Prize. The deadline is 30 June 2021. The Rosalyn Higgins Prize is an annual prize which awards EUR 1.000 of Brill book vouchers and a one-year LPICT subscription to the author of the best article on the law and practice of the International Court of Justice, either focusing solely on the ICJ or with the ICJ as one of the dispute settlement mechanisms under consideration. The winning article will also be published in LPICT and made freely available online for ninety days to maximize its dissemination. For more information about submitting to the prize, go here. 

Seminar Series on “Unpacking Transitional Justice: International Law, Memory, Power”: The Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL) at the University of Amsterdam, and Melbourne Law School’s Institute for International Law and the Humanities (IILAH) are pleased to announce a new seminar series entitled ‘Unpacking Transitional Justice: International Law, Memory, and Power’ convened by Dr Eliana Cusato (ACIL) and Valeria Vázquez Guevara (IILAH). The aim of the Series is to bring together scholars from around the world employing interdisciplinary and critical approaches to the study of transitional justice and international law, broadly understood. The relationship between international law and societies ‘in transition’ has been subject to increased scholarly interest over the past years. By exploring how international law, memory, and power interact in current responses to the violence of the ‘past’, the Series intends to push the conversation forward, as well as build new research networks and opportunities for collaboration. Workshop on behavioral approaches in international law for ILR: Together with Veronika Fikfak and Daniel Peat, Eva van der Zee is organizing an online workshop entitled “Behavioural Approaches in International Law” taking place online 22-23 April 2021. Program and registration is available here. 

NYU Roundtable event on “The Tyranny of Choice and the Interpretation of Standards”: On 18 March, the NYU Journal of International Law & Politics will host a roundtable event on Prof. Daniel Peat’s forthcoming article, ‘The Tyranny of Choice and the Interpretation of Standards: Why the ECtHR uses Consensus’. A draft of the article is available here. Dr. Peat will discuss his empirical study of the consensus doctrine at the European Court of Human Rights, followed by responses by leading scholars. The panel will feature Prof. Anne van Aaken, Prof. Kanstantsin Dzehtsiarou, and Prof. Laurence Burgorgue-Larsen. The event will take place at 1200-1330 EDT/1700-1830 CET. Registration is free and available here.”

26th Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition: American University Washington College of Law’s Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law is pleased to invite students from all universities around the world to register as teams in the 2021 Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The Competition is a unique trilingual (English, Portuguese, and Spanish) event established to train law students on how to use the Inter-American human rights legal system as a legitimate forum for redressing human rights violations. The 2021 Competition will be held virtually from May 16 to 28, 2021. The hypothetical case “Human Rights and States of Emergency: Unexpected Crises and New Challenges” written by Carlos Ayala, former Commissioner of the IACHR, and Santiago Martínez, Human Rights Defender, operates as the basis of the competition. Students argue the merits of this case by writing legal memoranda and preparing oral arguments for presentation in front of human rights experts acting as the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Call for Papers

Second TRICI-Law Conference on the Interpretation of Customary International Law: TRICI-Law is pleased to announce the 2nd Conference on “Interpretation of Customary International Law: Methods, Interpretative Choices and the Role of Coherence,” on 25-26 November 2021, in The Hague, The Netherlands (the COVID pandemic may require on-line or hybrid arrangements). This conference addresses the methods international judges from all branches of international law use to interpret rules of customary international law (CIL). The methods applied to interpret CIL are varied and contested. International courts and tribunals (ICs) have often engaged in interpretation of CIL, using such means as teleological or systemic interpretation. Too little has been done to systematically explore these and other methods. The conference has three main themes: i) methods of interpretation of customary international law; ii) variation of interpretative choices across international courts and tribunals; and iii) coherence as an approach or goal in the context of interpretation of customary international law. Participants are invited from several legal professions – scholars, judges and lawyers – including senior and junior researchers.  Please submit an abstract of no more than 500 words in a text file (.docx, .odt etc. – not .pdf) to trici-law[at]rug[dot]nl. Only one abstract per author (resp. team of co-authors) will be considered. The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 18 April 2021. Applicants will be informed of the selection committee’s decision no later than 10 May 2021.
