Call for Papers

  • The ASIL International Criminal Law Interest Group invites proposals for its annual Works-in-Progress workshop, which will be held on 31 January 2020 at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in Cleveland, Ohio. All interested participants should submit an abstract (500 words maximum) by 15 December 2019, via email to ASIL International Criminal Law Interest Group Co-Chairs, Andrew Boyle (jandrewboyle[at]gmail[dot]com) and Milena Sterio (m[dot]sterio[at]csuohio[dot]edu). Please also include a sentence about the stage the paper is expected to be in January (e.g., reasonably complete draft, early work in progress, etc.). The workshop will include both works-in-progress as well as full drafts. Papers may address any international criminal law topic, and this Call for Proposals is open to everyone in the international criminal law community. Preference will be given to ASIL members who are also members of the ASIL-International Criminal Law Interest Group. Paper presenters will be asked to circulate their drafts (or a summary of the project if it is still in an early stage) to workshop attendees no later than 20 January 2020. Those interested in serving as a commentator for a paper should also send an email to the Co-Chairs, Andrew Boyle and Milena Sterio, by 15 December 2019. Commentators will be asked to prepare five to eight minutes of comments on one of the papers. Those interested in presenting should let it be known if they are willing to serve as commentators as well. All Cleveland-Marshall College of Law faculty, staff, and students may attend for free. Participants who are not ASIL members or Cleveland State University affiliates will be required to pay a $40 registration fee (includes workshop and meals) for the conference. All meals will be provided, but participants are responsible for their own travel and hotel expenses.   • The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights invites submissions for a Comparative Law Research Roundtable on Civil Liability for Human Rights Violations and a subsequent edited publication. The Research Roundtable will take place on 23-24 October 2020 in Oxford, UK. Deadline for application is 10 January 2020.   • The Bonavero Institute of Human Rights announces establishment of the Oak Foundation Research Visitor Programme through funding provided by the Oak Foundation. In 2020, the Institute will host four human rights practitioners from the Global South interested in conducting an independent research project in the field of civil liability for human rights violations.   • The ESIL Interest Group on Peace and Security is proposing to organise a side event duringthe 2020 ESIL Research Forum at the Department of Law, University of Catania. The 2020 Forum will address the topic ‘Solidarity: The Quest for Founding Utopias of International Law’ and the Interest Group’s side event will take place on Thursday 23 April 2020. We invite papers from early-career scholars which address the above themes and questions, in the context of peace and security, and welcome those which focus particularly on: (1) The legal relationship between sovereignty, solidarity and utopia; (2) Solidarity, utopia and peace, and their theoretical alignment; (3) The balance between the competing demands of solidarity and security; and (4) Isolationism, security, and solidarity. Please submit an abstract in PDF (in English) of no more than 800 words by midnight on 17 January 2020 (London-UK time) to all of the IGPS Convenors: c[dot]moran[at]napier[dot]ac[dot]uk; iljarichard[dot]pavone[at]cnr[dot]it; starski[at]mpil[dot]de; and Nicholas[dot]tsagourias[at]sheffield[dot]ac[dot]uk. The following information must be provided with each abstract: the author’s name and affiliation; the author’s brief CV, including a list of relevant publications; and the author’s contact details, including email address and phone number. Only one abstract per author will be considered. Applicants will be informed of the selection committee’s decision no later than 28 January 2020. Depending on the number of abstracts and their quality, up to 6 abstracts may be selected. Full papers (between 7000-8000 words inclusive) should be submitted by 31 March 2020. Selected papers may be published in an edited collection or a special edition of a journal. Please see the ESIL website for all relevant information about the Research Forum. The Interest Group workshop is open to ESIL members and all participants are required to register for the Research Forum. (Registration will open in December 2019 / January 2020). UN Audiovisual Library

  • The Codification Division of the Office of Legal Affairs recently added the following lecture to the Lecture Series of the United Nations Audiovisual Library of International Law (AVL) website: Ms. Vera Rusinova on “Human Rights in Armed Conflicts” available in English and Russian.
  • The Audiovisual Library of International Law is also available as a podcast, which can be accessed through the preinstalled applications in Apple or Google devices, through SoundCloud or through the podcast application of your preference by searching “Audiovisual Library of International Law”.

  • The International Nuremberg Principles Academy is seeking to recruit a Project Officer with a special focus on working on the research project ‘Length of Proceedings at the International Criminal Court’. The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of international criminal law and procedural law, preferably also from previous work experience at or with international courts. He/she will also have experience in conducting research and in project management, preferably in an international environment. The successful candidate will have strong analytical and organizational skills and will be a member of a highly motivated, international and interdisciplinary team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior Officer(s) and contribute to the aforementioned research project as well as to other projects.   • NUS Centre for International Law (CIL) is hiring for 2 Research Positions: 1. Research Associate/Fellow (CIL’s Oceans Law and Policy Programme); 2. Research Associate/Fellow (MPA-CIL Oceans Governance Research Programme). The NUS Centre for International Law (CIL) is accepting applications for the two positions above. Applications open 10 December 2019 and close on 20 January 2020. CIL is seeking applications from candidates with both an advanced degree in international law (PhD or LLM) and a demonstrable interest in the law of the sea, marine environmental law or the international regulation of shipping.
