Whale Wars Are Back: Australia Ready to Launch ICJ Case
It looks like both Japan and Australia have rejected the IWC’s compromise proposal on whaling. So Australia is threatening again to bring Japan to the ICJ. There is still a chance of a deal before the IWC’s meetings in Morocco, but a deal seems unlikely anytime soon. In theory, Australia would want to bring such a case before the annual hunt starts again in November. And expect a request for provisional measures to stop whaling in the interim. Given that this is the ICJ, a lot a lead time is needed so I would expect an action no later than September and earlier if possible.
