ABILA – Crisis in Ukraine: International Law and Accountability: The ABILA ICC Committee is pleased to co-sponsor a virtual panel on Crisis in Ukraine: International Law and Accountability on Thursday, March 31 at 12:15-1:45 pm ET. Given the tragic outbreak of war in Ukraine and Russia’s flagrant violation of the UN Charter and ongoing commission of crimes, this panel will explore justice possibilities both at the level of state accountability as well as individual criminal responsibility. The panel will discuss the role that the International Criminal Court can play, as well as other possibilities for accountability. The discussion will include consideration of crimes under the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute, the crime of aggression, cyberattacks as encompassed within the International Criminal Court’s crimes, and the potential role of the International Court of Justice. Fulbright-Lund University Distinguished Scholar Award in Public International Law: The Fulbright Distinguished Scholar is co-hosted by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) and the Law Faculty at Lund University (LU). The aim is to promote collaboration between human rights scholars in the United States and Sweden. During the period of appointment, the Fulbright Distinguished Scholar will, inter alia, carry out research on topics of preference in the field of international human rights law with a view to publication of journal articles, books, or book chapter; and stimulate the academic environment in Lund through organization and participation in seminars and research workshops related to human rights. AJIL Call for Papers – “The War in Ukraine and the Future of the International Legal Order”: The American Journal of International Law is issuing a worldwide call for papers for an Agora symposium to be published in the October 2022 issue of the Journal. The topic – “The War in Ukraine and the Future of the International Legal Order” – recognizes that the present crisis raises foundational questions about the international legal order that extend beyond the facts of this case. Call for Papers – Webinar on ‘Lights and Shadows in the Ongwen Case at the International Criminal Court’: The research project team ‘Negotiating international criminal law’, Department of Language and Communication Studies, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Jyväskylä (Finland) is pleased to invite abstract submissions for the online seminar ‘Lights and Shadows in the Ongwen Case at the International Criminal Court: Inter- and Multi-disciplinary approaches’ to be held on the 13th and 14th October 2022.  Authors (individually or jointly) can examine the issues from one or more of these disciplines: law, language and communication studies, anthropology, philosophy, political science, psychology, journalism, and religious studies. It is aimed that each contribution identifies and discusses the novel and problematic issues that the ICC and other actors had to deal in the Ongwen case.  The organising committee plans to publish selected seminar papers in an edited collection or in a special issue in a peer-reviewed international journal. Deadline for abstract submission: 2 May 2022. The Human Rights Challenge in Europe’: new episode in the ‘Antonio Cassese: The Stubborn Sparrow’ podcast series: In the late 1980s, Antonio Cassese contributed to the growth of the protection of human rights in the European Union by leading an impactful research project at the European University Institute (EUI). In this 4th episode of the series, the co-hosts Paola Gaeta and Antonio Coco discuss such pioneering work with guest Andrew Clapham, an active member of that research project. They get a testimony about that endeavour by Philip Alston, who led another study at the EUI together with Joseph Weiler, that eventually contributed to the adoption of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in 2000. The podcast is available here, on SpotifyApple PodcastAmazon Music Podcast, and Google podcast.
