Virtual Event on ‘Prosecutorial Discretion at the International Criminal Court’: The KU Leuven – Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies is pleased to announce a virtual roundtable on ‘Prosecutorial Discretion at the International Criminal Court’ on Tuesday, 9 March 2021 from 9 – 11 am CET. The Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) enjoys discretionary powers in many respects, for example, in the selection and prioritisation of situations and cases. Such ineliminable discretion shapes the Court and yet it has often attracted criticism. While the current Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda is reaching the end of her mandate in June this year and the new Prosecutor Karim Khan has just been elected, it is time to take stock. How much discretion does the Prosecutor really have? How has it been exercised so far? What is the way forward? This timely roundtable aims to discuss these and other questions concerning the discretionary powers of the ICC Prosecutor with practitioners working at the ICC and academics. Speakers include: Prof. André Klip, Maastricht University; Prof. William Schabas, Middlesex University; Mr. Rogier Bartels, ICC, Chambers; Ms. Marie O’Leary, ICC, Office of Public Counsel for the Defence; Ms. Marie-Hélène Proulx, Defence Lawyer; and Dr. Rod Rastan, ICC, Office of the Prosecutor. The event will be introduced by Prof. Jan Wouters, KU Leuven, and moderated by Ms. Diletta MarchesiKU Leuven. Registration is compulsory and can be done here.
