Announcements

  • The Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs recently added the following lecture to the Lecture Series of the United Nations Audiovisual Library of International Law (AVL) website: Mr. Juan José Ruda Santolaria on “Reflections on international organizations, fora or groups at the international level: the implications of international juridical personality” (in Spanish). The Audiovisual Library is also available as a podcast, which can be accessed through the preinstalled applications in Apple or Google devices, through Soundcloud or through the podcast application of your preference by searching “Audiovisual Library of International Law”.
  • Today, 15 April 2019 is the tax filing deadline for US citizens and resident aliens living in the United States. Because the US government applies the nationality principle to prescriptive jurisdiction vis-a-vis taxation, if you are a US citizen or resident alien, your worldwide income is subject to U.S. income tax, regardless of where you reside. However, if you are a US citizen or resident alien residing overseas, or are in the military on duty outside the US, on the regular due date of your return, you are allowed an automatic 2-month extension to file your return and pay any amount due without requesting an extension. For a calendar year return, the automatic 2-month extension is to 15 June 2019. If you qualify for this 2-month extension, penalties for paying any tax late are assessed from the 2-month extended due date of the payment (i.e. June 15 for calendar year taxpayers). But even if you are allowed an extension, you will have to pay interest on any tax not paid by the regular due date of your return (i.e. April 15 for calendar year taxpayers). For more information, go here. (NOTE: due to the changes in the tax law over the past year, many taxpayers may receive lower refunds or, in some cases, may actually owe money. Adjust your expectations accordingly.)
