President Bush Notes Transnistrian Conflict

The separatist conflict in Moldova about which I have been blogging received a brief mention by President Bush on Thursday. Reuters reports the following regarding the meeting of President Bush and Romanian President Basescu:

The leaders also agreed that separatists in neighboring Moldova should not be allowed to secede from the country.
“We support the territorial integrity of Moldova,” Bush said.

Actually the situation in Moldova has been mentioned more and more by President Bush in the past couple of years. With the expected expansion of the EU to Romania next year, neither the U.S. nor the EU is enthusiastic about having a separatist enclave that is involved in all sorts of smuggling and money laundering and is off the grid of international monitoring just a few miles from the EU’s border.

More on the legal issues on Monday.
